Green Building

Green Building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout a building’s life cycle. It’s the next step in quality and is an approach to construction that can be applied to public and commercial buildings as well as the residential houses we work and live in. Green Building is alternately described as “sustainable” building and ultimately this may be a more accurate way it contributes to the protection of human health and social responsibility and as well as cultural values.

The building sector has the greatest potential to reduce CO2 emissions. Currently, 30% of global CO2 emissions and 40% of global resource consumption is a result of constructing. Green Building’s main goals are to optimize the environmental performance of a building using a life cycle approach, in which the materials and products used in a building are compared and evaluated for best performance at the building level. To enable such comparisons, information about the environmental performance of products must consistently be reliable and available.

Green buildings are as varied as the people who live in them. However, even though green buildings may look different from the outside, their designs are based on three broad principles:

  • Energy efficiency, the buildings use as little energy as possible
  • Conserving our natural resources, this broad objective recognizes that resources are finite
  • Indoor environmental quality, green buildings are designed to be healthy buildings

Green Building is not that simple. However, understanding the principles behind sustainable building helps us make appropriate decisions about the building we build and the people who work and live in them.
